My final project for this course will focus on how language and communication is imperative in our lives. I will make use of the hashtag #StoryTellingAsResistence to share the content on social media. This multimedia project will use both a blog post and a podcast episode (duration 1 hour and 15 minutes ca) featuring a well-rounded, conversational, and insightful chat with a linguist.
The goal for this assignment is to defend an issue that is important to me.
I would like to discuss on the representation in the English language. The main question I want to find answers and clarifications to is “how does the English language reflect its speakers’ culture – in the USA, UK, and other territories where this language is spoken and written by the majority?”
In order to answer this question, I’ve decided to chat with Jourden Lloyd, an African-American linguist based between Philadelphia and New York.
With Jourden I will focus on three main aspects that can help me understand, discover, and navigate this issue I intend to be vocal for. These aspects will be broken down in three questions and/or themes:
How other countries can learn English and the culture that its language is part of? (I will cite the Min-Zhan Lu’s text and the Italian education system information that I found on my peer reviewed piece).
Dialects in the USA: African American (Ebonics) vernacular and Native American (Jamila Lysicott and Zitkala-Su)
The language and grammar in the LGBTQ+ community (I will share my views – the difficulty in romance languages in terms of using and distinguish genders, including Jourden’s point of view).
